FKR: Free Kreigsspiel: VHS Punk '89 (CORRECTED)

Here is my first big trip inot the FKR land of blog posting. I hope to do it more frequently as the Blogosphere has come back alive once again...

Many of these Ideas came to me and from the FKR DIscord site which is what I call Primordial ROle Playing from back in the day before the rules were written, people made it up!

https://discord.gg/CrD4P7fvXp

VHS Punk '89

The Setting is Any Big City back in an alternate '89 where shit was violent. Street gangs and organized crime. Sex violence and drugs! The Boss rolls up some bad guys and the Gang rolls up some characters.

The Gang will be criminal sorts of no real value to the world! It's all about getting ahead, betrayal at every turn. People are just getting that way. Need money? Go rob someone. Drug dealers and organized crime always have money but they can shoot back. Banks and casinos are next. Rich people can be held for ransom.

Lots of fucked up evil shit and lots of cussing while playing this game is expected!

Back in '89 technology was almost getting futuristic but computers and cell phones were expensive. The internet, if available was dial up. It was very evident that shit was changing! CDs were starting to show up but cassettes and VCR tapes were the now!

One thing was the music. Go back and make yourself a soundtrack for your game!  Styles were wild and in '89 there were so many throwback styles. The hair was especially great!

Hits 3D6 for an average adult. Less dice for weaker people, more for big lunks.

2D6 v 2D6 winner does damage rolled.

Advantage roll Three dice and pick the best Two.

Disadvantage roll Three dice and pick the worst Two.

Heavy weapons, autofire and Shotguns can add the Extra Dice of damage.
Blast have an area where everyone takes damage.
Autofire Damage can be split between targets and every 6 allows an additional dice to be rolled IF the first roll was a winning roll.

Example: Teds 10HP rolls a 11 with a 5 and a 6 and the pig 11HP rolls a 3. That's 11 damage and then Teds roll another dice for a 5 because he is using a Shotgun for 16 total damage blowing the fucking pig away. Die mother fucker!

Explosives double the damage.

Fighting just knocks out a person at 0 Hits. At Half your hits, your bloodied and look real bad. Heal back 1D6 Fighting damage after an hour of resting, fucking and drinking.

Deadly damage is healed at 1D6 point a week. Skilled Medical treatment can double that.

At Half Hits you are Bloodied and have disadvantage.

At Zero Hits you are unconscious  die in as many minutes as your Negative Hits. Example: Johnny got 10 hits. He takes 13 damage so he is dead in 7 minutes.
First aid requires a roll vs damage. If you don't have the right stuff, it's a Disadvantage!  If successful one can heal 1d6 right away and if you get above 1 hot point you are stabilized.

Armor stops damage.
Light 2
Medium 4
Heavy 6

Cover Stops Damage but it works as a layer of Hit Points
Light 4
Medium 8
Heavy 12

DEATH DUGEONS, MEAT GRINDERS and DUNGEONPUNKS

There is a little project that I have been working on. Here is a Hint of what it will be called.

DEATH DUGEONS, MEAT GRINDERS and DUNGEONPUNKS

In this game the Death Master IS trying to kill your character.

Stripped down. Adult Content. Violent beyond all other games. FUCK Grammar and Spellchecking!

PRIMITIVE ZINE STYLE!!!

The Death Master is trying to kill you.

3D6 in order 6 times in four columns and your hit points and keep what you roll. Flawed or great by the roll of the dice but all equally doomed! IF you don't like it then FUCK YOU go play something else. THIS RPG gives you NOTHING! You must earn every Fucking XP that you get.

UNLIKE other modern RPGs there is no Min-Maxing and Character Optimization like a bunch of little fucking pussies!

You get what the dice god MASLIF gives you.

IF you don't like it, then FUCK YOU and go play something else!

An 18 is going to mean something again.

There is no schedule for when this is going to get completed but one day I will release a print your own fold over ZINE for it. Depending on the response, I will make more content. You bet your ass that when I make an dungeon or setting it will be trying to kill your characters.

Only the clever and the lucky will survive.

Yet Another DUNGEONPUNK RPG MANIFESTO  (an early Draft)

Yet Another DUNGEONPUNK RPG MANIFESTO  an early Draft
.
Saw this Dungeonpunk Manefesto and Dungeonpunk counter manefesto. Yeah no. Let me make mine and see what people think...
http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/209450/Dungeonpunk

1. Violence is the answer to most questions, next is talking about it and thinking.

2. The world is only there to make you a victim and take everything from you so screw the world!

3. You must take what you want and fight to keep it, just not die over it.

4. Humanoids and Demons are inherently evil and must be killed before they kill you and destroy everything you value.

5. Foul unnatural beast are mostly evil and must be killed before they kill you.

6. The nobility for the most part are selfish evil and don't care about the lower class people and will use you without care.

7. The church is corrupt and only cares about power and gold.

8. The lower class does not stick together as most people are out for themselves and will do what they must to survive.

9. The party is the only family most of you have but a family member can still betray you.

10. Make sure that you always have a plan of escape, especially when you are in a "safe" place.

11. Those who do not make every effort to survive no matter what, will die as no one deserves to live.

12. A true friend is rare and yet still may betray you.

13. There are no true friends, only people who have not been made the right offer to sell you out.

14. There is no "safe" space and the longer you stay the more unsafe it becomes.

15. Cultist are the worst of enemies as they have no problem killing themselves to kill you and everyone around and they have no limits on how screwed up they can be.

16. Most of the gods don't care and if you do contact a god then most likely it just wants to eat you.

17. Live life, party, and have good times while you can because either you will die or grow to old and then die.

18. Always get vengeance when you can but also know when to run away so you can get vengeance later.

19. The undead suck.

DUNGEONPUNK CHARACTER SHEET

Being a DUNGEONPUNK you are in a world of backstabbing and deceit. How does one get out of this life? By adventuring in Dungeons and Ancient Crypts! Dungeons and Ancient Crypts are found everywhere. There most likely is one below the city, but if it has already been found then it's most likely looted. They go deep and have their own rules. For some reason the creators of dungeon always filled them with traps. What sick mind would do that? One who wants their treasures for themselves even if they are dead. That won't do. So what kid of traps are there? A game master can never stop making them up. Pit traps (with spikes, acid, boiling oil, flaming oil, etc.), darts, blades, heavy objects, traps, chutes, gases, poisons, alarms, magical effects, and whatever you can devise! Monsters are everywhere in dungeons. IF a dungeon has an empty area then it's trapped or there is something worse than a normal monster. Humanoids, evil cults and the undead tend to stalk dungeons as well as weird lowlife creatures such as giant insects, worms, slimes, and oozes. Dungeons undiscovered and not looted are full of gold and treasure. Remember that there are Magic Items that rule and suck. The Game Master should make up different magical rings, necklaces, belts, potions, scrolls, weapons and armor. Many magic items have a mind of their own and an agenda. Magic items of the lesser sort are part of everyday life. Items like magic lanterns, magical doors, pumps, and elevators. Beware! Anything of value can be treasure. An old book may be worth more than a pile of gold. A DUNGEONPUNK takes advantage of the situation and succeeds where other fail. Beware of cursed items as one cannot get rid of them easily. All cursed items have an agenda and that normally means you might be used and die in the process. Try and give them away or even better sell them to someone who sucks. Let's not forget that swords can fail you, stealth can fail you, magic can fail you, and even the gods can fail you. Always have another plan and an escape route. When you run out of Destiny then you are at the mercy of the dice and the dice hate you

Stepping Back....

😒My last few games I ran, I feel went like crap. I am so trying.

I used to be a fantastic Dungeon Master.

I have also had huge spans of time where I was working turnarounds so huge spans between games. The campaign, no matter how hard I have tried just does not go anywhere. You know when you have written a great adventure and knocked it out of the park. You know when you put obvious hints. The players also seem to have amazing abilities to roll 20s as well which would be exciting but they do it almost every combat.

I am burnt the hell out. My rules don't excite me anymore. Still so much more to do but I don't feel like messing with them anymore.

Going to go back to Basic, Delving Deeper, Basic Fantasy, or Labyrinth Lord. I want 3D6 in Order, save or die, "give the players nothing that they don't work for" gaming.

The last session, nobody showed up at the dudes house. Some were sick and some just ignored the game time posting so screw it. People ought to know that one can tell if you look at their Facebook posting. I will let someone else run games.

I am done as a game master for the time being.   💀

UPCOMING ZOMBIE SURVIVAL HORROR RPG "WITHOUT HOPE" COMING SOON.

What many of you out there in blog internet land don't know is that my team of talented writers and artist have been working on a Zombie Survival Horror RPG called WITHOUT HOPE.

We are now finished and are working on the art. Here is a sample of some of mine...

Now your wondering why would someone come out with another Zombie Horror Survival RPG in a small sea of them?

My fellow writer and I had a vision of a Zombie Horror where the players were just normal people in a world gone mad. With that level of realism brought in a level of fear and tension that previous Zombie RPGs I had written by myself had never had nor had any of the others I have played.

IN fact I have never had a Zombie Horror game make me so tense!

With my co-writer there were controls and standards of the Zombie Horror we wanted.
  • One bite, no matter what and it's over, unless you chop of the limb but that still might not work.
  • Guns and Combat is deadly realistic yet really simple.
  • Other people are the worst monsters.
  • Sanity and Humanity scores that reflect the decent into terror and madness from seeing the dead rise to eat the living and the loss of family and friends.
  • Super quick character creation in the old school style of play. If your character dies then roll up another in minutes.
  • A simple and easy to use percentile based system.
  • There are no super zombies, intelligent zombies of any kind, just Zombie Horror in it's purest form.

Back to the Dungeon V 2.0 Preview

A bit of BRAINSTORMING on what was sucking about BttDRPG as I tried to make an NPC.

It takes to long with all the damn features.

Time to burn it down!

Much of BttDRPG has been a failure.

Why? Well I went away from the roots of the original RPG and made a clunky game for the players.

While playtesting I noticed than most if not ALL of the features of the races and classes were ignored.

By the players and myself.

SO why even have them in the rules? Why not strip them down to their most basic presentation?

SO here I present to you the new STRIPPED down version of the Races in Book I.

2.0 RACES

There are many races some fantastic and some terrible that dwell upon these worlds other than humans. A few of the nonhuman races available for use as player characters are detailed in these rules. The details included in the racial descriptions below is kept to a minimum so that the players and the Game Master can come up with their own versions of the races. Most other details of the character are entirely the decision of the player.

Dwarf

Dwarves are a subterranean race that lives in homes carved deep into the mountains. They are slightly shorter than mankind but wider and stocky. They are know for their long beards (even a few of the Dwarf women), fine drinks, mining, music, art, and warfare against foul humanoids of the underworld.

Halfling

A race of small folk, half the size of mankind, with large hairy feet, that live on comfortable burrow homes. Halflings are know for their love of music, feasting, drinking, and smoking. Haflings tend to dress very well and be quite civilized.

Human

This is exactly like you are and they are considered the base race to create other races from.

Wood Elf

Deep within the ancient primordial forest live the rare wood elves. Elves are the same size as mankind but usually thinner and delicate framed and have pointed ears. They are skilled in warfare, art, magic, and music.

So there you go. Got rid of all of the modifiers, clunky rules, and the BS and just made it a few sentences of description. So what do you think?

So here now are the four basic classes...

3.0 CLASSES

The class descriptions are formatted in the following manner detailed below. There are many more possible classes and players and game masters alike should make up new character classes. These are the four most common classes: Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard

Name: The name of the class being described.

Description: A short description of the character class in question.

Hit Points: The Base Hit Points granted by class plus your Constitution modifier. Each additional level it's only the #D roll plus your Con modifier.

CLERIC

A holy warrior and priest who can use all armor and weapons approved by their god. They also cast divine spells.

Hit Points: 8 + 1d8 per level.

FIGHTER

A person skilled in the arts of combat who can use all armors and all weapons.

Hit Points: 10 + 1d10 per level.

ROGUE

Anyone who practices stealth and thievery as well as sneak attacks. Prefers to use lighter Dexterity weapons.

Hit Points: 6 + 1d6 per level.

WIZARD

Anyone who has learned the ways of Magic and how to harness it's power. Armor is not normally worn by Wizards because it interferes with the casting of magic. Wizards prefer to use a dagger, staff, and sword as these can be tools in rituals but can poorly use any weapon.

Hit Points: 6 + 1d6 per level.

Do you really need anymore description? Of course this is the rough draft but compare these descriptions to my 1.7 versions.

Much more simple and much more to the heart and root of what you need in an RPG.

Roll attributes

Just pick a race and class

Roll gold

Buy stuff

Start playing in less than 5 minutes!

Much of the Game Master's sections will stay the same.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Musings of a Mad Wizard Gamer.

Not going to shelve the game. GM burnout with bouts of creativity THEN bouts of doubt. Version 1.7 is going to stay for awhile longer as I just want to make modules and maps. Not as organized as I would like , but was the original game not a total mess? I fixed and streamlined the problems with magic (see document) on spells per day and such. In earlier version casters could cast so many spells that it made it hard to keep track of. That has been fixed. It is the game that I have always wanted to run. It has that simplicity of rules that allow one just to create with a few of the modern options pegged on.

Was greatly inspired by stories of how they were first forming Blackmoor and then Greyhawk. Have also been inspired by Ed Greenwood's stories of his forgotten realms. The Ryth Chronicles also has made creative juices flow. Stories of the West Marches of Ars Lundi. The Dark Ages Campaign of Chogowiz. The Watchfires and Thrones campaign of Micheal Curtis in The Archive of the Rotted Moon. Philotomy's Musings of the Mythic Underworld. I want to create really cool worlds. Starting small and then continuing on. My Little Barony, Raven's Keep, and the megadungeon The Black Stairs is going on 7-8 years old now. I have ran it using Swords and Wizardry, OSRIC, LL/AEC, Pathfinder (too much work!), and finally Back to the Dungeon RPG!

The maps and the stories are about to expand! I have decided to flesh out my world a little bit more.

Is the BlogOSRsphere dying off?

Is the BlogOSRsphere dying off?

It seems to be waning a bit.  Oh there are people who post quite a few times a week but not like it was just a few years ago. It is kinda nice to be able to keep up with the blog post though.

It is very much alive though!

Some of the main players have stopped posting or have slowed down to a mere trickle. Some have fallen to scandals or have made scandals.

Still every day there is at least something interestingly posted for the love of the game.

I know that I am here for the long haul whatever that is even though my blog is one of the least of the OSR blogs.

It seems that the OSR has not really moved forward at all if you compare the post of Chicago Wiz way back in 2011.

Does something needs to happen publishing wise to get the OSR ball rolling again? I don't think that is ever going to happen (save the release of Adventures Dark and Deep but that's just me getting excited about a product that I have yet to buy) again.

People are still going to publish Retro Clones (Neo-Clone, Simulacrums, Fantasy Heartbreakers, etc.)  but the chance for glory has passed.

I hope to be proven wrong on that statement but we shall see...

People seem to be very happy with the RPGs they are playing.

What needs to happen that would re-excite (Like it was a few years ago!) the BlogOSRsphere? I think people getting out there and playing and posting about it.

Some sort of organized play starting on a local level and then possibly becoming state, regional, and then possibly national and posting about it.

TARGA needs to come back.

Some really good ground breaking home made modules and house rules!

New race and class options!

Wait, that still is going on !

In my area, RPG Gaming seems dead though rumors of groups existing in secretive insular little clans. Old School Gaming locally has a few small sparks but they never seem to ignite. If there is an OLD campaign that has existed since the late 70s and early 80s in my area I don't know about it.

What to do? What to do?

Back to the Dugeon RPG All in One Rulebook, Refomatted, Still is Rough Form

Well I have done a little bit of editing on BttDRPG. Reformatted it into a larger print and put it on a one document form.
The BttDRPG has turned out far better than I thought.

We have been play testing it on and off and the spellcasters don't seem to be overpowered with my spellpoint version. I may have to weaken the spells a bit.

The class "ROLL a 20 and cool stuff happens" satisfied the modern gamers and the old school gamers as well.  In fact that has been the most well received aspect of BttDRPG.

It seems that many of the issues that the old schoolers had with the older versions of the game have been satisfied.

Class/Race Restrictions
Level Limits
Worthless Low Level Spell Casters
All poisons being instant Death
Non Unified Mechanic
Rather Complicated Attribute Bonuses in the Advanced Version

Old Schoolisms I won't be getting rid of and New Schoolims I won't be adding...
Easy to die if you are foolhardy
You WON'T HAVE to know the rules to play
You won't have to learn large amounts of rules to Game Master
The Six Attributes
The Basic Bonuses
Ability to totally customize your world
Ability to personalize your Character
No Skill List only a background story
No Feats ever
Game Master Fiat

I may have another person Game Mastering my game in a few weeks AND I may also gain an editor as well.

It is a slow process but I don't have a schedule.

What I hope to achieve is a (local) large group(s), sharing the same setting, multiple GMs, large pool of players, and possibly an old school type zine news letter. Kinda like what happened with the Ryth Chronicles.

Hero's Mag Redo 1985 Version with Modern Innovations

Well it has went through many innovations. A freeform version, a version that took into account armor damage stopping ability and a universal chart. Just not as fun as the old roll vs AC so I just went back to that version. You get to buy your powers and for the most part they are preset and preloaded. No fiddiddly power levels and such.

For example: You want to be a human torch type dude? It will cost you 16 Power Points!
Elemental Body Flame: + 9 AC, has body of pure fire, can fly, burn things at +2 with 1-10 damage. P16

Want to be a master of magnetism?
Elemental Power Metal: +3 Magnetic Ray 1-12, Control Magnetism +5 P8

Sample Villains
Gonion: Brute 16PP
Super Strength +8 1d12, Armor +6 AC16, Endurance +2d6.
AC16 HD12d6

Gravitas: Controller 19PP
Elemental Power Gravity: +3 Graviton Ray 1-12, Control Gravity +5, Fly 100MPH +5AC in Flight, Accuracy +2, Acrobatics +4 AC.
AC14/19 MAC10 HP10d6

Silver Fist: Cybernetic Ninja 19PP
Martial Arts: +4 1d8, +4 to block/parry, Acrobatics +4AC, Cybernetic +3 AC, +3 Super Strength 1d6, Super Senses +2
AC17 MAC10 HD10d6 Cybernetic Martial Attack +7 1d10 (One dice up due to Cybernetic Strength)

Overcast: Teleporter 12PP
Teleport 1000ft., Agility +2. Punch +0 1d4
AC12/22 MAC10 HD10d6 Move10mph/1000ft 1sec.

Kinda close to getting done but not really.

Your Own Fantasy World.

Just a little exercise. Take your city you live in and using THESE rules below make a fantasy version of YOUR city you live in. Take real world people and convert them into NPCs. Take all of your old characters, adventures, dungeons, and villains from the past and put them in the history. Make a graveyard for dead characters. Write at least a page and draw a map. Make yourself into an PC/NPC based on your gamer street cred.

Lake Charlemagne Core Rules
1.Take your current modern city’s population and divide it by 10. This is your fantasy city’s current population.
2. Use the standard method for character creation. Standard races and classes unless allowed by the DM. Get some
players. Be honest. (THIS WAS 3.5 but now it would be Pathfinder. Not my favorite set of rules but the setting was made based on these rules.)
3. Now start creating maps based off of real world geography. Use most of your main streets and waterways. If living in
dangerous areas the cities need to be walled. Many of the bridges can be replaces by ferry crossings although huge bridges
and landmarks should be converted into gigantic ruins. Add in the demi-human races and their areas. For instance in
forested areas and parks add elves and gnomes. Any rocky areas add Dwarves and such. Don’t forget to add areas where the
foul humanoids live. The world has to be still untamed.
4. We will use the core rulebooks at first and go from there.
5. Every Player and DM MUST contribute to the setting by writing up at least a shop or building in the setting. Yes the
players help write the game making it more theirs. Remember to not go too far.

Other Rules. Time units and Calendar. There are 365 days in a year. Unless the players want to write up a special calendar
then we will use the standard earth calendar, as in days of the week and names of the month. There will be 365 time units
that a character must spend as he plays. One day equals 1 time unit. A week is 7 time units. The starting day of the first
official game will be Jan. the 1st. Year unknown until we come up with a story.

Hell if you make a setting close enough to another it would be bad ass role playing for a bunch of people to get together to go to War or have Espionage or combine settings.
