Rose Colored Glasses OSR and 5E Musings

Well, finally got to run a game of Labyrinth Lord with a group of old gamers and some of their kids and cousins.
I guess I look back at Old School gaming with rose colored glasses as the character creation compared to 5E was
a drudgery.

Without some kind of very nice preset character creation help built in like 5E has, the game can really be taxing on
your patience. Once everyone had their characters made we finally started to play.

Now mind you we were already a few hours late getting started. After playing the extremely smooth unified
mechanics of 5E (and my Back to the Dungeon RPG), I quickly realized that much of the old school systems are quite
clunky in comparison. We just had gotten used to how they work and wrapping our head around another system
can be hard.

Having used both 5E is pretty much an old school game (because of the design advice from RPG pundit) mixed with
some new school unified  mechanics which just simply flows better. It's not totally lethal like B/X games but it can be
once you have ran out of dice for a short rest AND if you have used the exhaustion mechanics. After that, it becomes
quite hard on the players once those buffers are gone.

The unified mechanic is pretty much Superior to any and all of the old school methods of task resolution. Why?
Because system matters if it gets out of the way of the game! Roll a D20 instead of just pulling out the various dice
for checking on sometimes the same thing. Some abilities use a D6 while as a thief they use a % so after coming
from the B/X, 2E background from my early days of gaming, it seems 5E mechanics are a sweet spot. Very simply
it just is way smoother than the old stuff.

I am pretty sure that I will be shelving pretty much all my old school games and for my fantasy fix will just be playing

Sci Fi Primordial RPG

FF2D6SRD

Make a character.

Get information on the setting.

Come up with a name and a concept for a character for the setting.

Come up with an outstanding feature such as "Strong, Tough, Quick or whatever"

Have a small description of what you do such as " The Swordsman, The Charmer, The Best Damn Pilot, The Gun Slinger, The Merc, The Wizard, The Time Traveler" as a guide. Other details will come out in play as needed.

Come up with you physical and mental status if any. If your character has any disabilities, mental illnesses or whatever.

Obtain some possessions and wealth for your character if any.

Start playing.

Roll a 2D6

The higher the roll the better the outcome.

A 1 on any roll means something bad. Double 1s mean the worst possible outcome.

A 6 on any roll means something good. Double 6s mean the best possible outcome.

A 7 for an average difficulty. Lower the number if the person is skilled.

Combat: All involved roll. The high roll gets to say what happened.

Some bad guys will have a difficulty of 3 to 12 and most are defeated when their number is rolled or higher. Within a few points of the number, dramatic injuries and such can be narrated.

If you are running the game then come up with some sort of world and story for the characters. Only come up with what you need to tell this story.

Primordial Freeform/Rules Light Role Playing Games the Movement

So it looks like there are people doing (some have been doing it for decades) the Freeform Rules Light stuff like my DUNGEONPUNK RPG!  Nothing is original under the sun anymore but many of these methods we're back in the day.

What pioneers that Wesley and his Braunsteins were that inspired Dave Arenson to create Blackmoor that later in inspired Dave and Gary Gyax to create Dungeons and Dragons.

They played loose and free as there were no rules, they made it up and it was fun so they kept doing it. All they did was roll a dice to decide!

I call that style PRIMORDIAL Role Playing!

So who is out there promoting, playing, and writings PRIMORDIAL RPGs?

There is RPG Tinkerage which has inspired me to write Tales From the Green Dragon Inn and even write more DUNGEONPUNK RPG stuff.  His site always has great little tidbits of rules and such. My only problem is the blogger doesn't post enough! He always has something interesting.

https://rpg-tinker.blogspot.com/

There is Darkworm Colt and his fantastic take on the early days of PRIMORDIAL RPGs.  I have been visiting his site over and over mining it for various ideas and inspirational contents.  Many stories if how they did it BEFORE there were rules! True PRIMORDIAL RPGs talking! There are also a few mentions of Sword & Backpack which was more of a reminder of my old Novel system and one of the inspirations for DUNGEONPUNK RPG.

Let's not forget to celebrate Sword and Backpack which is a work of genius in it's Freeform simplicity. Not just that but it's punk rock presentation that somehow also captures the fantasy game. I would love to see more love spread towards this little game.  It's so similar to my Novel RPG system that it partly inspired me to write my Freeform fantastic system DUNGEONPUNK RPG.

There is Into the Odd which is such a cool ass game! I can't stress how cool and simple this game is yet so deep of a story. Then the offshoot inspired by such as Maze Rats and such. EDIT: Don't buy ANYTHING from BATIONLAND Press. They treat their loyal customers from the beginning of their game like SHIT.  The human filth at the DISCORDS at the FKR Collective, who also overlapped with the NSR, the Rainbow OSR and BASTIONLAND! These subhumans decided to ban myself and others for no reason. WHY? because were not libtard scum! Once again unless you're a total commie, don't buy their stuff. I wish I could get my money back from BASTIONLAND Press.

Unless you are a leftist fascist, you can't just STFU and enjoy RPGs.

LINK REMOVED because it smelled of dung.

There is Chirine the ancient one. This guy has a treasury of PRIMORDIAL Role Playing techniques from the original gamers Dave Arneson and MAR Barker. Most of his site is dedicated to Tekumel and is rather daunting but worth the time to take a look at how fantastic a world can be made. Imagine being an actual character in a world equivalent to another Tolkien and Middle Earth and that's what MAR Barker and Tekumel is.  His video on how they played back then is great! Very interesting videos and such.

We can't forget to mention the documentary The Secrets of Blackmoor as it shows "The Blackmoor Bunch" and how they rolled back then.

Are there any others that I missed? Are their games sites and blogs that are also talking about the PRIMORDIAL style of Role Playing?

Tales from the Green Dragon Inn

I took the RPG Tinkerage's advice and streamlined the rules to a more narrative set of rules. I hope you like this version.

Yet Another DUNGEONPUNK RPG MANIFESTO  (an early Draft)

Yet Another DUNGEONPUNK RPG MANIFESTO  an early Draft
.
Saw this Dungeonpunk Manefesto and Dungeonpunk counter manefesto. Yeah no. Let me make mine and see what people think...
http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/209450/Dungeonpunk

1. Violence is the answer to most questions, next is talking about it and thinking.

2. The world is only there to make you a victim and take everything from you so screw the world!

3. You must take what you want and fight to keep it, just not die over it.

4. Humanoids and Demons are inherently evil and must be killed before they kill you and destroy everything you value.

5. Foul unnatural beast are mostly evil and must be killed before they kill you.

6. The nobility for the most part are selfish evil and don't care about the lower class people and will use you without care.

7. The church is corrupt and only cares about power and gold.

8. The lower class does not stick together as most people are out for themselves and will do what they must to survive.

9. The party is the only family most of you have but a family member can still betray you.

10. Make sure that you always have a plan of escape, especially when you are in a "safe" place.

11. Those who do not make every effort to survive no matter what, will die as no one deserves to live.

12. A true friend is rare and yet still may betray you.

13. There are no true friends, only people who have not been made the right offer to sell you out.

14. There is no "safe" space and the longer you stay the more unsafe it becomes.

15. Cultist are the worst of enemies as they have no problem killing themselves to kill you and everyone around and they have no limits on how screwed up they can be.

16. Most of the gods don't care and if you do contact a god then most likely it just wants to eat you.

17. Live life, party, and have good times while you can because either you will die or grow to old and then die.

18. Always get vengeance when you can but also know when to run away so you can get vengeance later.

19. The undead suck.
