A review by LUCA C...

Hey! I got a great 5 star review! YEAH!

After a first reading of this DM and the Player guide too, I think that is one of the most beautiful, well written and complete products of this kind...and in these days I'm reading a lot of them! I put it in my Top 5 of its niche. I could say more after a "field" test :)

Can't Seem to Make Gaming Happen.

Been down lately. Real down. My main stress release is gaming but that does not seem to ever happen. I also seem to be the only Game master for Fantasy Gaming. Tried to collect a few other Fantasy Game Masters but they have failed to produce (even though many have claimed to be really good game masters.) or don't want to do it. I have tried for years to start an expeditionary campaign of old using Back to the Dungeon RPG which shares the workload between game masters but it never seems to happen.

You know when you are really on target with an adventure or module you write. You know when one is kinda half ass and sucks. Especially if you have been gaming since 81 yet my well written games lack fire. I am getting burnt out as a game master as well.

I can't really explain it other than many of my players are non adventurous adventurers.  I am not a killer GM but they are careful to the point of making the game boring at times.

They take NO chances save a few of the characters. One adventure (one claiming to be one of the best GMs in the world in his younger days) even suggested that the party go back to town because the dungeon was dangerous.

The party tends to not go the way of the adventure such as exploring a mountain in the distance that has nothing to do with the adventure or is a separate part of the adventure. Even throwing in blocker monsters does not stop the wandering.

People also don't always show up thus screwing up the continuum.

My terrible schedule also lacks any consideration for life. Around the middle of this year I worked almost 2 months straight then another month. I am about to work almost 4 months straight once again. I am afraid that may gaming group will die.

UPCOMING PROJECTS for DriveThruRPG

The White Trash Deep Woods RPG is progressing weirdly along in kind of disturbing ways. It'd not going to be like anything that has ever been released before that I know of. A weird trip that may be familiar to anyone who has visited weird small towns where something is "going on".

The PUNKs Game will be called PUNKs: Brimstone Lake City Tales and will set around 1988 to 1995 an era I call 199X. For me it felt like 100s of years passed in that short amount of time. The rules are going to be stripped down to a bare minimum, There also will be a huge music list of what we listened too to help get people in the mood when they play. If it goes well a playlist on YouTube as well.

Going to be also setting down the foundation (or not) for a weird game set in the early to middle 80s where a bunch of gamer nerd kids find an opening to a real fantasy world.

There is also plans (or not) of an 80s inspire Future Past game. A world that is the future as imagined in the early to middle 80s.

Two new releases for sale on DriveThruRPG! STARCLADS: Rules for Science Fiction Adventures and Graphic Novel: A Free Form Supers Role Playing Game

I have released two older completed projects that are in playtest stage that I forgot I had, for sale as a very inexpensive PDF on DriveThruRPG! If you like my games then feel free to tell the world!

MOST of my games are made to make fold over zine booklets because Zine Booklets are cool and beat the MAN.

They have been free online for years in one form or another but now I have decided to make them available for a very low price as I am unemployed and uninsured.

STARCLADS
Rules for Science Fiction Adventures
Version 0.357
Role Playing Adventures in Science Fiction
The story so far…
There has been a terrible war that has left the systems in turmoil. There are many dead planets out in the galaxy that no side won as the war itself ruined the planets.
The year is guessed at somewhere around 21,777 give or take 20 years either way. Much of the records of the 10 million inhabitable planets and the 300 billion stars are lost as well as most of past history. The planet Terra is a lost legend from long ago although some of its churches and cultures still do exist in much evolved forms. It was found that humans were all over the galaxy and even in some other galaxies that have been explored. Many of these humans have changed or been modified into very strange sub-races.
There are many sections of the universe that are suited for different styles of play and one can feel free to add another section as much of the STARCLADS universe is unexplored or undocumented due to the great collapse.

This game is first and foremost a Space Opera styled RPG. It also has the features of an economic game with fortunes being made and lost.

UNLIKE many other Sci-Fi RPGs it is very rules light!

STARCLADS is also a very dramatic Tactical Space Combat War Game.

Graphic Novel
A Free Form Supers Role Playing Game
by
Eldrad
V1.4.4

At last a free from and very rules lite supers game. You simply write up a super and start playing in minutes. Power and Combat effects are determined by a D20 roll and interpretations of the roll from the perspective of the player and game master. Destiny Points take up the slack of attributes! Teams can be formed! Villains can be defeated! Buildings and city blocks destroyed in the process!

Upcoming Projects!

I have surprisingly sold a few copies of Back to the Dungeon on Drive Thru RPG site. Wow it feels good! If you did not get copies of Back to the Dungeon when it was free, well you had your chance for years! More modules and Rulebooks are coming!

I also have a nearly complete Retroclone of a certain B-MOVIE Late Show RPG.

I also have a PUNKS game set in a fictional corrupt city in the early 1990s. It's loosely based on collected punk rock stories of many of my old friends. Many of the encounters are not politically correct but for some of us it's what we went through in our youth. It was a time when music, hair, girls, drugs, alcohol, and freedom were all important! It's going to be set up where the rules can be used ti tell other tales in the early 90s as well.

My other project is White Trash RPG! A rip-roaring story of what goes on when the coal mines and the plants and factories dies in  the Deep Dark Woods! Small towns located off the beaten path die and the people become tribal. The government came in and bought up much of the land and somewhat cut off the highways by not repairing them.  They started dumping toxic waste and other terrible thingsThe old military base is still got it's lights on. . Some people stayed and they became dangerous to outsiders.  Meth labs, moonsine, and weed farms put food in the mouths of babes. Old feuds still linger and sides and factions were formed.  Worst of all there still are things dark and evil that lurk in the woods. Many people tell of supernatural horrors like the pig man and the wood witch called up from dark times long ago when the dark woods people began to suffer.

In a really really hopeful next week timeline me and my Co-Author of No Hope a terrifying zombie horror RPG will be available for sale! This game is scary because the characters are just normal people! These zombies are the one bite and you're over type. Best of all less than five minutes to create a victim er I mean character.

More projects coming.

My ideal MMORPG: Who wants to make this?

Let's face it, MOST MMORPGs SUCK!

I have a better idea that has not been done before as a MMORPG.

Get rid of the complication.

No Mercy!

Make it dark and scary!

A world with extreme seasons.

The only thing that should increase is HP and Gold to buy better weapons and armor.

There would be no Damage Creep from weapons unless magical.

ONLY HP and AC increase.

SLOW natural healing.

XP only increases if you rest.

If you rest in an unsafe area then you might not get to rest.

Make there be four classes.

Fighter - Has really Large HP and AC. Can use all weapons.
Rogue - Has Medium HP and Light AC. Can use most weapons.
Priest - Has Medium HP and Heavy AC. Can use weapons chosen by gods, Can banish evil beings such as undead. Has healing spells plus a very few others.
Wizard - Has Light HP and no AC. Can use a few weapons. Has a small list of spells that help party and do damage. More powerful spells are dependent on levels.

Permanent Death unless you have a Priest of enough high level to raise you IF you have the gold.

Races would give small benefits.
Human
Elf
Dwarf
Halfling
Gnome
Drow
Fey
maybe some others.

Get rid of the complication.

Total character customization in the looks department. Armor and weapons would have at least five different looks.

The game would be level based.

Have gritty towns and easy to kill towns people.

Only the mouse keys and the mouse moving around to do combat.

Left lick and mouse movement attack.

Right Click Shield.

Double tapping movement keys dodge!

Wizards/Priest need to stay back and cast their small list of spells on a rotary menu by the middle key.

Get rid of the complication.

Have huge open worlds with classic monsters.

Huge open worlds with terrible weather and natural disasters!

Huge worlds with walled towns and cities!

Every building can be entered.

All items can be pilfered.

Powerful NPCs, so don't piss them off.

All actions will effect the game world.

Huge mega dungeons!

Staying outside of town/city is deadly unless you find a safe place!

Have a light source.

Have food and water.

Have blankets for warmth in the high mountains.

Sandbox worlds where if you run into something too powerful and you don't run away you die.

No formal guild or party system, just if you meet up on screen then you go adventuring with each other.

A player would have to get his character to a safe place between games.

A few starting safe areas but once you are in the wilderness then permanent death of character.

Have a graveyard.

There would be high level NPC priest that could raise a dead character.

The map is only so large but have simple minecraft type editing where the world could be built upon.

New map additions are first come first serve BUT can be deleted or moved by admins if not acceptable.

IF you are a game designer then I have the ideas! Get with me! We could make the best MMORPG game ever!

ars ludi: Grand Experiments: West Marches

One of the best gaming articles out there.

Grand Experiments: West Marches

West Marches was a game I ran for a little over two years. It was designed to be pretty much the diametric opposite of the normal weekly game:
1) There was no regular time: every session was scheduled by the players on the fly.
2) There was no regular party: each game had different players drawn from a pool of around 10-14 people.
3) There was no regular plot: The players decided where to go and what to do. It was a sandbox game in the sense that’s now used to describe video games like Grand Theft Auto, minus the missions. There was no mysterious old man sending them on quests. No overarching plot, just an overarching environment.
My motivation in setting things up this way was to overcome player apathy and mindless “plot following” by putting the players in charge of both scheduling and what they did in-game.
A secondary goal was to make the schedule adapt to the complex lives of adults. Ad hoc scheduling and a flexible roster meant (ideally) people got to play when they could but didn’t hold up the game for everyone else if they couldn’t. If you can play once a week, that’s fine. If you can only play once a month, that’s fine too.
Letting the players decide where to go was also intended to nip DM procrastination (aka my procrastination) in the bud. Normally a DM just puts off running a game until he’s 100% ready (which is sometimes never), but with this arrangement if some players wanted to raid the Sunken Fort this weekend I had to hurry up and finish it. It was gaming on-demand, so the players created deadlines for me.
Setting: Go West Young Man
The game was set in a frontier region on the edge of civilization (the eponymous West Marches). There’s a convenient fortified town that marked the farthest outpost of civilization and law, but beyond that is sketchy wilderness. All the PCs are would-be adventurers based in this town. Adventuring is not a common or safe profession, so the player characters are the only ones interested in risking their lives in the wilderness in hopes of making a fortune (NPCs adventurers are few and far between). Between sorties into the wilds PCs rest up, trade info and plan their next foray in the cheery taproom of the Axe & Thistle.
The whole territory is (by necessity) very detailed. The landscape is broken up into a variety of regions (Frog Marshes, Cradle Wood, Pike Hollow, etc.) each with its own particular tone, ecology and hazards. There are dungeons, ruins, and caves all over the place, some big and many small. Some are known landmarks (everbody knows where the Sunken Fort is), some are rumored but their exact location is unknown (the Hall of Kings is said to be somewhere in Cradle Wood) and others are completely unknown and only discovered by exploring (search the spider-infested woods and you find the Spider Mound nest).
PCs get to explore anywhere they want, the only rule being that going back east is off-limits — there are no adventures in the civilized lands, just peaceful retirement.
The environment is dangerous. Very dangerous. That’s intentional, because as the great MUD Nexus teaches us, danger unites. PCs have to work together or they are going to get creamed. They also have to think and pick their battles — since they can go anywhere, there is nothing stopping them from strolling into areas that will wipe them out. If they just strap on their swords and charge everything they see they are going to be rolling up new characters. Players learn to observe their environment and adapt — when they find owlbear tracks in the woods they give the area a wide berth (at least until they gain a few levels). When they stumble into the lair of a terrifying hydra they retreat and round up a huge posse to hunt it down.
The PCs are weak but central: they are small fish in a dangerous world that they have to explore with caution, but because they are the only adventurers they never play second fiddle. Overshadowed by looming peaks and foreboding forests yes. Overshadowed by other characters, no.
Scheduling: Players Are In Control
The West Marches charter is that games only happen when the players decide to do something — the players initiate all adventures and it’s their job to schedule games and organize an adventuring party once they decide where to go.
Players send emails to the list saying when they want to play and what they want to do. A normal scheduling email would be something like “I’d like to play Tuesday. I want to go back and look for that ruined monastery we heard out about past the Golden Hills. I know Mike wants to play, but we could use one or two more. Who’s interested?” Interested players chime in and negotiation ensues. Players may suggest alternate dates, different places to explore (“I’ve been to the monastery and it’s too dangerous. Let’s track down the witch in Pike Hollow instead!”), whatever — it’s a chaotic process, and the details sort themselves out accordingly. In theory this mirrors what’s going on in the tavern in the game world: adventurers are talking about their plans, finding comrades to join them, sharing info, etc.
The only hard scheduling rules are:
1) The GM has to be available that day (obviously) so this system only works if the GM is pretty flexible.
2) The players have to tell the GM where they plan on going well in advance, so he (meaning me) has at least a chance to prepare anything that’s missing. As the campaign goes on this becomes less and less of a problem, because so many areas are so fleshed out the PCs can go just about anywhere on the map and hit adventure. The GM can also veto a plan that sounds completely boring and not worth a game session.
All other decisions are up to the players — they fight it out among themselves, sometimes literally.

Gamer Music: Uriah Heep - The Wizard

He was the wizard of a thousand kings

and a chance to meet him one night wondering.

He told me tales and he drank my wine.
Me and my magic man kinda feeling fine.

He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire.
And as he spoke I felt a deep desire
to free the world of its fear and pain
and help the people to feel free again.

Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts?
Cause then I know we'll find we're not so far apart.

Everybody's got to be happy, everyone should see.
For we know the joy of life and peace that love can bring.

So spoke the wizard in his mountain home.
The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone.

And I will dream of my magic night

and the million silver stars that guide me with their light.

UPCOMING ZOMBIE SURVIVAL HORROR RPG "WITHOUT HOPE" COMING SOON.

What many of you out there in blog internet land don't know is that my team of talented writers and artist have been working on a Zombie Survival Horror RPG called WITHOUT HOPE

We are now finished and are working on the art. Here is a sample of some of mine...

Now your wondering why would someone come out with another Zombie Horror Survival RPG in a small sea of them?

My fellow writer and I had a vision of a Zombie Horror where the players were just normal people in a world gone mad. With that level of realism brought in a level of fear and tension that previous Zombie RPGs I had written by myself had never had nor had any of the others I have played.

IN fact I have never had a Zombie Horror game make me so tense!

With my co-writer there were controls and standards of the Zombie Horror we wanted.
  • One bite, no matter what and it's over, unless you chop of the limb but that still might not work.
  • Guns and Combat is deadly realistic yet really simple.
  • Other people are the worst monsters.
  • Sanity and Humanity scores that reflect the decent into terror and madness from seeing the dead rise to eat the living and the loss of family and friends.
  • Super quick character creation in the old school style of play. If your character dies then roll up another in minutes.
  • A simple and easy to use percentile based system.
  • There are no super zombies, intelligent zombies of any kind, just Zombie Horror in it's purest form.

Back to the Dungeon V 2.0 Preview

A bit of BRAINSTORMING on what was sucking about BttDRPG as I tried to make an NPC.

It takes to long with all the damn features.

Time to burn it down!

Much of BttDRPG has been a failure.

Why? Well I went away from the roots of the original RPG and made a clunky game for the players.

While playtesting I noticed than most if not ALL of the features of the races and classes were ignored.

By the players and myself.

SO why even have them in the rules? Why not strip them down to their most basic presentation?

SO here I present to you the new STRIPPED down version of the Races in Book I.

2.0 RACES

There are many races some fantastic and some terrible that dwell upon these worlds other than humans. A few of the nonhuman races available for use as player characters are detailed in these rules. The details included in the racial descriptions below is kept to a minimum so that the players and the Game Master can come up with their own versions of the races. Most other details of the character are entirely the decision of the player.

Dwarf

Dwarves are a subterranean race that lives in homes carved deep into the mountains. They are slightly shorter than mankind but wider and stocky. They are know for their long beards (even a few of the Dwarf women), fine drinks, mining, music, art, and warfare against foul humanoids of the underworld.

Halfling

A race of small folk, half the size of mankind, with large hairy feet, that live on comfortable burrow homes. Halflings are know for their love of music, feasting, drinking, and smoking. Haflings tend to dress very well and be quite civilized.

Human

This is exactly like you are and they are considered the base race to create other races from.

Wood Elf

Deep within the ancient primordial forest live the rare wood elves. Elves are the same size as mankind but usually thinner and delicate framed and have pointed ears. They are skilled in warfare, art, magic, and music.

So there you go. Got rid of all of the modifiers, clunky rules, and the BS and just made it a few sentences of description. So what do you think?

So here now are the four basic classes...

3.0 CLASSES

The class descriptions are formatted in the following manner detailed below. There are many more possible classes and players and game masters alike should make up new character classes. These are the four most common classes: Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard

Name: The name of the class being described.

Description: A short description of the character class in question.

Hit Points: The Base Hit Points granted by class plus your Constitution modifier. Each additional level it's only the #D roll plus your Con modifier.

CLERIC

A holy warrior and priest who can use all armor and weapons approved by their god. They also cast divine spells.

Hit Points: 8 + 1d8 per level.

FIGHTER

A person skilled in the arts of combat who can use all armors and all weapons.

Hit Points: 10 + 1d10 per level.

ROGUE

Anyone who practices stealth and thievery as well as sneak attacks. Prefers to use lighter Dexterity weapons.

Hit Points: 6 + 1d6 per level.

WIZARD

Anyone who has learned the ways of Magic and how to harness it's power. Armor is not normally worn by Wizards because it interferes with the casting of magic. Wizards prefer to use a dagger, staff, and sword as these can be tools in rituals but can poorly use any weapon.

Hit Points: 6 + 1d6 per level.

Do you really need anymore description? Of course this is the rough draft but compare these descriptions to my 1.7 versions.

Much more simple and much more to the heart and root of what you need in an RPG.

Roll attributes

Just pick a race and class

Roll gold

Buy stuff

Start playing in less than 5 minutes!

Much of the Game Master's sections will stay the same.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Musings of a Mad Wizard Gamer.

Not going to shelve the game. GM burnout with bouts of creativity THEN bouts of doubt. Version 1.7 is going to stay for awhile longer as I just want to make modules and maps. Not as organized as I would like , but was the original game not a total mess? I fixed and streamlined the problems with magic (see document) on spells per day and such. In earlier version casters could cast so many spells that it made it hard to keep track of. That has been fixed. It is the game that I have always wanted to run. It has that simplicity of rules that allow one just to create with a few of the modern options pegged on.

Was greatly inspired by stories of how they were first forming Blackmoor and then Greyhawk. Have also been inspired by Ed Greenwood's stories of his forgotten realms. The Ryth Chronicles also has made creative juices flow. Stories of the West Marches of Ars Lundi. The Dark Ages Campaign of Chogowiz. The Watchfires and Thrones campaign of Micheal Curtis in The Archive of the Rotted Moon. Philotomy's Musings of the Mythic Underworld. I want to create really cool worlds. Starting small and then continuing on. My Little Barony, Raven's Keep, and the megadungeon The Black Stairs is going on 7-8 years old now. I have ran it using Swords and Wizardry, OSRIC, LL/AEC, Pathfinder (too much work!), and finally Back to the Dungeon RPG!

The maps and the stories are about to expand! I have decided to flesh out my world a little bit more.

BS3 BACK to the DUNGEON RPG The Drow Undercity of Death

BS3 BACK to the DUNGEON RPG The Drow Undercity of Death

Those horrible demonic Drow! We were a very large merchant caravan of over twenty wagons with thirty men at arms strong. We were five merchants with two of our wives with us and my two daughters. Thank the gods our sons had stayed back to run our businesses back in the capital!

We were beset upon in the darkest of nights by foul soldiers with armor dark and black and hair as white as snow. They killed most of our men at arms and we surrendered! Why did we not just keep fighting to the death!

The dark elves took us far into the ground in the terrible dungeon know only as The Black Stairs. First there were the screams! Screams of men women and children. Then there was the smell. A smell of feces, blood, and death!

Blood flowed like a river in this terrible place. Bodies lay all over broken, weeping, insane, and some dead.

We were taken to some beautiful yet horrible Drow woman. She chanted in horrible tongues and prayed to dark gods!

Some how she KNEW that the two girls were my daughters! She picked up the youngest of only three years old by her throat and looked at me. Two Drow guards escorted us to another room.

I heard my wife crying and screaming as Drow guards piled on top of here kicking and beating. There was nothing I could do. We were brought to a huge room with a horrible stinking pit with my little daughter still gagging and choking.

Then she looked at me laughing and threw my little girl into the pit screaming until I heard her hit in the darkness. At that time my mind broke and I do not recall all of the tortures they did to me or my family.

I will tell you this. The Drow are evil. The Drow are coming for us one day! They will come in the dead of the night and kill us all in our safe little barony.

Expeditionary Campaigns

I am going to have to get off my duff and start a game of BttDRPG for a Expeditionary Campaign in the style of The West Marches. I have tried to gather up a few GMs but they have all failed to produce one single dungeon or session.

I have a vision that if it succeeds will be like the sessions of old.

Sadly the last few game  sessions have been ADD laugh fest as well as my ball and chain never wanting to game in my gaming building, thus ruing much of my ability to run my game as I can't get organised from a damn recliner. My arrow in my knee also seems to plan things during gaming days as well. Then the henpecker complains the game is not going very well. Somethings got to give and it is not going to be gaming or me.

BS2 The Little Barony: The Black Stairs, The Creeping Shadow of the Witch Queen Mauug

Here is BS2 The Little Barony: The Black Stairs, The Creeping Shadow of the Witch Queen Mauug! The second level of The Black Stairs and a few bits of intrigue for the character to face!

It seems that ANOTHER really LARGE adventuring party has "claimed" the dungeon for their own!
Will the players choose their characters to run away and just give up their hard found discovery?

Who is this Witch Queen Mauug that is rumored to have an army of horrible monsters at her command?
